Villa Winternitz
AN architectural gem BY ADOLF LOOS
The villa was built by Adolf Loos and Karel Lhota in 1932 for Prague lawyer JUDr. Josef Winternitz and his family: his wife Jenny, daughter Suzana and son Peter. Villa Winternitz shows typical elements of Adolf Loos architecture, especially the unusual arrangement of the interior (the so-called Raumplan), thoughtful built-in furniture and carefully selected cladding materials in the interior. The resemblance to the famous Villa Müller is therefore by no means accidental.
More information about the authorship of the villa, including copies of the original documents, can be viewed here.
You can visit Villa Winternitz on our Guided tours, or if you would like to get to know the space more intimately, you can book an Experiential accommodation for one night, where you will have the entire villa and garden just to yourself.

HISTORY OF WINTERNITZ FAMILY
The Winternitz family lived in their villa only until 1941, when they were forced to leave the house under the pressure of racial persecution due to their Jewish origins. They continued to live in Prague until 1943 when they were transported to Terezín and later to the Auschwitz concentration camp. Josef Winternitz and his son Petr died there in a gas chamber right after the arrival. Jenny Winternitz and her daughter Suzana survived in Auschwitz under harsh conditions until the end of the war. After the liberation, they returned to Prague, but never again to their family villa. Neither Jenny nor Suzana never talked about it.
Only Suzana lived to see the Velvet Revolution, telling her relatives about the existence of the house shortly before her death in 1991. The descendants regained the house in 1997 and decided to restore the house to its original form from the 1930s.
More information about the history of the family can be viewed here.
